Dogwood Winter
04.09.2007Posted by: Ben
I've been in the Bristol region for about 10 years and the idea of snow in April still confuses me. Especially after a year of not getting any decent snowfall. Nature doesn't care if I'm confused, though, and sure enough this past Easter weekend (after a couple weeks of 75+ degree weather), here comes the snow. They call it "dogwood winter" around here, and it's easy to understand why. The dogwoods are some of the most eager plants in the Spring. First sign of warmth and they start budding. Soon, they have flowers and leaves before most trees have even begun to warm their sap.
You almost have to feel sorry for the flowers, chilled and possibly dying. But dogwoods have been around these parts for millenia and I'm sure they're less confused than I by a few late-season snowflakes.
